birch tree library

Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University, Cardiff

description

Set in the post industrial Wirral town in Birkenhead, the project sought to use a public library as an intermediary between new development residents and existing deprived communities. Imagining a knowledge centre as a public landscape, a signfiicant itnerest was also in the materiality of brick, textile and mechanical furnicular systems to honour the rich industrial heritage of the Wirral. Internally the library is imagined to be a continuous hall that acts as a forest of books where patrons can get lost or wander. This is supported with ancillary community hall, artist studios and exhibition spaces to offer a comprehensive public amenity.
